HOW MUCH: $350,000

SETTING: La Union is a small residential community in southern New Mexico, about 40 minutes from El Paso, Tex., and the Mexican border. According to the listing agent, the area is largely agricultural. Anthony, the nearest city, about 15 minutes away, has some shopping and restaurants, but residents often go to El Paso.
INSIDE: The house was built in 1984 and significantly renovated by its current owner over the past four years. Floor and countertop tiles were imported from Mexico. Several interior doors were salvaged from an older house in El Paso. There are two bedrooms downstairs, including the master, which has a fireplace and an en-suite bathroom with a separate soaking tub and shower. The house’s third bedroom is upstairs.
OUTDOOR SPACE: The house is set on four acres of desert. The gate at the driveway reads “el cielito con nopales” (little heaven with cacti).

SETTING: This condo, in Chicago’s West Loop, is one of 225 apartments in a building originally used to manufacture menswear for Hart Schaffner Marx. The West Loop is a neighborhood of former manufacturing buildings that, like this one, have been converted to condos. The neighborhood is near downtown Chicago, home to the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum of Natural History and Grant Park/Millennium Park. It’s also a few blocks from Union Station and a subway stop.

SETTING: This house is in Williamsville, a section of Newfane. The area is rural. There is a post office and a general store. Green Mountain National Forest is nearby. There are a handful of places to shop and eat in Newfane, more in the nearest city, Brattleboro, about 20 minutes away, at the New Hampshire border.
INSIDE: The house was built in 1863. Doors, red oak ceiling beams and wide-board flooring are original. The third level — originally the attic, according to the listing agent — is now a master suite with an office area. The three other bedrooms are on the second level. All have closet space. Two have views of the church across the road; the other has views of the general store. The main level has a living room, an updated kitchen and a library with built-in bookshelves. In addition, there’s a barn, now used for storage and a recreation room.
